Welcome to St Francis Xavier's Primary
School - Box Hill, Victoria
St Francis Xavier’s (SFX) is a Catholic Parish Primary School
in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It is situated within the
municipality of the City of Whitehorse (www.whitehorse.vic.gov.au),
which is known for its tree-lined streets and abundance of bushland
reserves. The municipality is located just 15 kilometres from
the centre of Melbourne, or 20 minutes along the Eastern Freeway.
St Francis Xavier’s enrols catholic students from Prep
to Grade Six who are residents of the parishes of St Clare’s
North Box Hill or St Francis Xavier’s Box Hill. The school
is run by the St Francis Xavier’s Parish, Box Hill which
is in the care of the Franciscan Friars. Schools in the Archdiocese
of Melbourne are supported by the Catholic Education Office Melbourne
(www.ceo.melb.catholic.edu.au)
The school offers a comprehensive range of academic programs
and extra curricular activities, as well as an Arts Program and
a Physical Education Program. The outstanding aspect of the school
is its community spirit - there is a culture of care for each
other in the community. Parents are involved in the school by
way of the School Education Board, the Classroom Helpers Program
and the Parents and Friends Association. Each child is valued
and cared for by a dedicated staff and by all members of the community.
School History
In 1927 the Parish of St Francis Xavier’s (SFX) was established
as part of the Melbourne archdiocese. Fr Norman Clack was the
first Parish Priest.
In 1928 the Sisters of Our Lady of Sion opened a girls’
high school as well as an elementary Parish School. The parish
school continued under their care until the early 1970’s
but is now administered by Lay Staff who are appointed by our
Parish Priest.
The Franciscan Friars became responsible for St Francis Xavier’s
Parish in 1975. In 1999 the Friars also became pastors of St Clare’s
at Box Hill North with whom St Francis Xavier’s is now a
partnered parish.
The school was proclaimed on 1st March 1928 as No.1272 and commenced
with 109 pupils - we now have approximately 350.
The School has been developed to its present facility in many
stages:
* A double storey building facing Whitehorse
Rd. [1928]
* Additions to school and neighbouring house
purchased and since demolished – now an Adventure * * *
Playground area.[1951 & 1965]
* Temporary and Portable Classrooms.[1955]
* A Terrapin Building
* Additions to Administration, Resource Central
Area, Library and Parish Hall.[1988]
* Provision of an Information Technology Centre.[1998]
* A recent addition of four classroom block,
upgrade of grassed areas and relocation of Tennis Court.[1999]
A School of over seventy years requires renewal and upgrade constantly.
The original buildings need renovating and it is desirable to
relocate certain facilities. The demand for the school is constant
and the type of housing in the areas surrounding the school encourage
young families to settle here and establish their family roots
in the area .
The parish school has always been a significant dimension of
SFX Parish life and in the 21st Century it continues to be so.
